Close To Shore – Michael Capuzzo

What is it about a shark fin cruising through the water that arouses a persons interest? I can’t give a logical answer for that, except it just does.

My interest in sharks began when Jaws was released back in the 70’s. Too young at the time, I was not allowed to see it. However because there was so much hype about the movie I became curious. The music of course was the main attraction and now some forty years later the de da, de da, theme song still pulls me in.

I read Close To Shore for book club. It is in factual story about a shark who reeked havoc on the New Jersey coast. Similar in many ways to JAWS, except real.

Below are a few sentences that grabbed my attention while reading the book, followed by my personal thoughts.

‘Splashing and kicking in tandem, trailing a wake of bubbles and froth, both of them, man and dog, began to swim.’

Talk about a death wish, whatever you do never splash and kick when entering the surf and for goodness sakes don’t swim with dogs. Big no, no’s.

‘He was only in three and a half feet of water, close to shore. Safety was at hand. But it was too late.’

For the life of me I can’t imagine what it must feel like to be attacked by a shark. To be eaten alive

‘The great white’s surprise attack was launched with overpowering force from behind.’

That’s the thing about shark attacks. A swimmer never see it coming until they are being set upon.

‘A lone swimmer is particularly defenceless.’

When swimming never forget the golden rule – stay with the pack. Never swim alone

If you enjoyed theses little snippets please buy yourself a copy of Close To Shore by Michael Capuzzo. It is an interesting read filled with historical facts.

The book although engrossing comes with a warning,

1.) Don’t take to the beach

2.) Don’t read before swimming
